After many years of hard work and struggle by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Warsaw, starting from the beginning of the 2010/20100 academic year a new and unique department of Afghani Studies will be available at the University of Warsaw Oriental Studies Department. It will be the first year where students may apply for this field.

Afghanistan needed a dramatic last-ball run out to edge a thriller against Canada after Ashish Bagai almost carried the underdogs to victory. The packed crowd of Afghanistan supporters, still in full voice following the team's triumph in the World Twenty20 qualifiers, were treated to a fluctuating spectacle of 50-over cricket at its clammy-palmed best as a spirited Canada side came within a whisker of causing an upset.

Chasing an unlikely 289 to win, Canada had timed the chase superbly, needing 38 from the final six overs with captain Ashish Bagai well set on 70, four wickets intact and a Powerplay still in hand. They took full advantage of the first over of fielding restrictions, with Bagai clubbing Shapoor Zadran for two fours and a two to take the equation to 25 from 30 balls.
At the outset, Foreign Minister Rassoul highlighted historic religious and cultural relations between the two countries, and expressed Afghanistan’s gratitude for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s assistance to Afghanistan in numerous areas, including political and economic and reconstruction.
He also stressed strengthening of Afghanistan-Iran bilateral relations.


Foreign Minister Rassoul expressed Afghanistan’s gratitude for French support to Afghanistan’s efforts in the combat against terrorism and narcotics, and strengthening security and development. He also called for strengthening of Afghanistan-French relations.

Foreign Minister Dr.Zalmai  Rassoul on January 23th met with US Ambassador to Kabul, Mr.Karl W. Eikenberry.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Zalmai Rassoul on January, 23th met with Italian Ambassador to Kabul, Mr.Claudio Glaentzer , Mr. Glaentzer congratulated Dr. Rassoul on his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Zalmai Rassoul on 23th, January spoke separately by phone with his US and German counterparts, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle.


US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton congratulated Dr. Rassoul on his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and wished him success in his new capacity.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta met yesterday with his Swedish counterpart, Mr. Carl Bilt.

At the outset, Foreign Minister Spanta expressed Afghanistan's appreciation for the role of the European Union (EU), particularly that of the Swedish government, in Afghanistan's reconstruction, development and its combat against terrorism and narcotics. With regard, to narcotics, he highlighted the significant reduction in poppy cultivation, noting that "twenty Afghan provinces were now poppy-free."

Foreign Minister Spanta meets Deputy UN Special Representative   
 to Afghanistan Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta today met with Mr. Peter Galbraith, Deputy to the UN Special Representative to Afghanistan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta yesterday took part in official meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to consider Afghanistan's first report on the Convention on the Rights of the Child.  Also attending the meeting were senior   officials of the Afghan government, diplomatic core and representatives of civil society.

Addressing the gathering, Foreign Minister Spanta noted that the report, which will be presented to the United Nations, was prepared in accordance with Afghanistan's international commitments in protecting, safe-guarding and promoting the rights of children.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta met with Mr. Zamir Kabulov, Russian Ambassador to Kabul.

Foreign Minister Spanta underscored the expansion of Afghanistan-Russian relations and highlighted the recent quad-lateral meeting of Heads of States of Afghanistan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan and Pakistan, which convened in Dushanbe. He also praised the Russian Ambassador for his role in the consolidation of Afghanistan-Russian Federation relations.

Foreign Minister Spanta Concludes Official Vsit to India


Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta paid an official visit to New Delhi, India from 26-28 July 2009 at the invitation of his Indian counterpart Foreign Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna.

During his visit, Foreign Minister Spanta met with Prime Minister Dr. Manhoman Singh, Foreign Minister Krishna and National Security Adviser Narayanan, at which a range of issues, including bilateral, regional and international issues were discussed.

In his meeting with Prime Minister Singh, Foreign Minister Spanta expressed Afghanistan's gratitude for India's constructive role in Afghanistan's reconstruction and stabilization process.  On his part, Prime Minister Singh reaffirmed his government's commitment and support to achieve peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan.

With regard to elections, both sides expressed the view that the successful convening of the up-coming presidential elections would mark the consolidation of the democratization process in Afghanistan.

Deputy Foreign Minister Kabir Farahi Meets ICRC Head of Delegation


Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Kabir Farahi today met with the Head of Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mr. Reto Stocker.

At the outset Mr. Stocker expressed appreciation on behalf of the ICRC for Afghanistan’s cooperation with the institution over the past many years.  He attached importance to Afghanistan’s signing of the Geneva Convention and its readiness to ratify and adopt the conventions two-additional protocols, one of which concerned the issue of civilian protection

China makes financial contribution to Afghan Presidential Elections

The government of the People’s Republic of China has made a financial contribution in the amount of $500,000 for up-coming presidential elections in Afghanistan.  The contribution was made on the basis of the agreement reached between Foreign Minister Spanta and his Chinese counterpart during the recent official visit to China.

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has closely followed the recent developments in Xinjiang province of the People’s Republic of China.

Afghanistan respects the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the People’s Republic of China and believes that Chinese leadership will adequately address the issue in accordance with its national interest.

 

 

The Minister for Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Mr. Ehsan Zia signed 7 development projects in the province of Urozgan today 29th January 2009.
The projects include 3 intakes, 2 retaining wall with 2011 M length, 1500 M roads and construction of a 60 M motor able bridge at cost of more then 2 million USD.
The projects will be completed in 3 to 4 months benefiting 72 thousands people in Trinkot area at Urozgan.

The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the United Nations hosted a reception on Wednesday, jointly with the Permanent Mission of Germany, to mark the opening of a photography exhibition entitled “Afghanistan – The Country and its People.”

The exhibition showcases more than a hundred photographs by the renowned German photographer Mr. Helmut R. Schulze taken in Afghanistan between 2002 and 2008. The photographs display the breathtaking landscapes and eloquent faces of Afghanistan, showing an alluring and intriguing country that is often eclipsed in the media by images of war and devastation. Although depicting the poverty and isolation of many of the inhabitants, Mr. Schulze’s photographs nevertheless show an enduring, patient people dedicated to survival despite the difficulties.

 

Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, today met with his Polish counterpart, Mr. Radoslaw Sikorski.  The meeting the first of a series of official engagements scheduled for Foreign Minister during his official two-day visit to Warsaw.

 

The two sides discussed a range of issues, including Afghanistan-Poland bilateral relations; international efforts in Afghanistan and the situation in the region.

 

Foreign Minister Sikorski reiterated his government’s continued commitment to Afghanistan for the coming years.  He highlighted the recent decision of the Polish government to increase military and humanitarian aid for Afghanistan, noting that “the number of Polish soldiers serving in Afghanistan would increase to 2,200” in the coming months, which would make Poland “the sixth largest military contingent in Afghanistan.”

 

Moreover, he expressed his government’s readiness for additional assistance for Afghanistan, including the “construction of 4 kilometers of roads and support for radio-broadcast and television networks in Ghazni province.”  He also said his government would “contribute an additional one-million Euros to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF) in 2009.”
