Foreign Minister Spanta Concludes Official Vsit to India
Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta paid an official visit to New Delhi, India from 26-28 July 2009 at the invitation of his Indian counterpart Foreign Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna.
During his visit, Foreign Minister Spanta met with Prime Minister Dr. Manhoman Singh, Foreign Minister Krishna and National Security Adviser Narayanan, at which a range of issues, including bilateral, regional and international issues were discussed.
In his meeting with Prime Minister Singh, Foreign Minister Spanta expressed Afghanistan's gratitude for India's constructive role in Afghanistan's reconstruction and stabilization process. On his part, Prime Minister Singh reaffirmed his government's commitment and support to achieve peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan.
With regard to elections, both sides expressed the view that the successful convening of the up-coming presidential elections would mark the consolidation of the democratization process in Afghanistan.
Meeting with his Indian counterpart, Foreign Minister Spanta highlighted the importance of Indian assistance to Afghanistan as vital to Afghanistan's stability and development. The two-sides highlighted terrorism as an important security threat facing the region and reiterated their resolve to combat it. Moreover, they underscored the strategic Afghanistan-India partnership and stressed enhanced bilateral cooperation.
In that regard, they committed to the establishment of an Afghanistan-India Partnership Council for increased cooperation in various areas, including political consultation, trade and industry, agriculture, energy, health, education and capacity-development.
