Foreign Minister Spanta meets Swedish Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta met yesterday with his Swedish counterpart, Mr. Carl Bilt.
At the outset, Foreign Minister Spanta expressed Afghanistan's appreciation for the role of the European Union (EU), particularly that of the Swedish government, in Afghanistan's reconstruction, development and its combat against terrorism and narcotics. With regard, to narcotics, he highlighted the significant reduction in poppy cultivation, noting that "twenty Afghan provinces were now poppy-free."
Foreign Minister Spanta also underscored the need for sustained international assistance to Afghanistan to achieve sustainable progress in reconstruction and defeating terrorism and narcotics.

On his part, Foreign Minister Carl Bilt, whose country is serving as current president of the EU, welcomed the holding of recent presidential elections and also noted that Afghanistan's reconstruction remained a top priority for the EU.

The two-sides also stressed the importance of ensuring that the will of the people was reflected at the outcome of the recent presidential elections.
