Kabul, January 18th, 2012
H.E. Dr. Zalmai Rassoul Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan met with Mr. Jan Kubis, the Special Representative of UN Secretary General to Afghanistan and Chief of UNAMA, today morning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Foreign Minister appreciating the role of UNAMA in the reconstruction and security of Afghanistan, said he hoped the support of the UN with Afghanistan will continue. He added that a country that has been through three decades of war and has embarked on the long journey of reconstruction and securing stability requires the cooperation of the international community and international organizations such as the UN.
Addressing Mr. Kubis, the Foreign Minister said, “The role that UN will play will be more crucial, particularly when it comes to the transition and peace processes, and the regional situation. In this context, your arrival and your appointment are important for us, particularly given your personality, the trust of the Secretary General in you and the knowledge you already have about Afghanistan and the broader region.”
Mr. Kubis said “ he was grateful for getting the opportunity to meet the FM soon after his arrival in Kabul and assuming his new job.”
“I am here as a partner to you and to Afghanistan. I intend to conduct close consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as I develop UNAMA’s operational plan under the revised mandate from the UN Security Council.”
He once again assured that the UN assistances to the people of Afghanistan will continue.
Prior to assuming his current position, Mr. Kubis has worked as the Executive Director of UN Economic Commission in Europe and UN Deputy Secretary General, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia in 2006 to 2009, and Secretary General of Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
