Afghanistan has got valuable improvements in health system and there is a prominent progress in the implementation of Basic Package of Health Services
The first batch of contracts for establishing sub-centers and mobile health teams will be signed on Sunday Aug 24, 2008. Under these contracts, 12 non governmental organizations (NGOs) including 6 national and 6 international will establish 55 sub-center clinics and 16 mobile health teams in 19 provinces - Wardak, Samangan, Balkh, Sari pul , Nimroz, Badghis, Ghazni, Paktya, Khost, Bamyan, Takhar, Baghlan, Logar, Ningarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Zabul, Kunduz, and Di Kundi.
In total Afghanistan from Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI) funds has planned to establish 120 sub-center clinics and 80 mobile heath teams. 2 sub-centers and 4 mobile health teams were established two months ago in Kabul, Parwan , Panjshir and Kapisa provinces. The cost of the current contracts including 6 already established is 7,606,543 US$ for 3.5 years. Last year GAVI approved Afghanistan’s proposal for strengthening the health system with the total amount of 34.1 MUS$ from 2007 to end of Dec 2011.
“The projects will be funded by Health System Strengthening grant from Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI). In addition to improving access to essential health services, these funds include activities that will improve quality of health care, knowledge of people and as well improve the ability of Ministry of Public Health to better monitor the delivery of health services.” said Dr. Faizullah Kakar, the Acting Minister of the Public Health. He also added, “Signing these contracts proves the reality that MoPH very much prioritizes the quality and quantity of health services, esp. in the rural areas of the country.”
Soon MOPH will sign more contracts which will cover 63 sub-centers and 6 mobile health teams. Out of total 69 remaining, 46 will be contracted in mid September or even earlier. Continues…
What are mobile health teams and
sub-center clinics?
Using the map, mobile health teams try to reach people who are living in
isolated areas in order to provide them health services. On the other hand,
sub-centers are planned to provide essential health services for small pockets
of population and villages and cover average groups of 5,000 individuals.
